Description

Size: 4ft 0in x 2ft 2in (122 x 66cm).

Antique Baluch camel ground prayer rug of very small size.

Circa 1900.

The rug has a well drawn tree of life design and has excellent colour, the camel wool ground is very soft. The rug retains the original banded weft work decorated end finishes at both ends. Due to the very small size, this rug could have been woven for a child to use.

The rug is in excellent condition with slight even wear, and good pile. The lower end finish shows some signs of wear.

The rug is suitable for light domestic use.

Baluch rugs are hand-knotted textiles traditionally woven by nomadic tribes across the borderlands of Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. Prayer rugs from this tradition feature a distinct arch or mihrab design at one end, frequently incorporating symbolic motifs such as the tree of life.

These rugs were constructed using hand-spun sheep wool or camel hair for the pile, warp, and weft. Dyes were derived from natural plant, root, and mineral sources, producing saturated terracottas, indigos, dark browns, and natural camel tones.

Authentic period examples exhibit soft, hand-spun wool, a supple handle, and dark selvages wrapped in wool or goat hair. They feature hand-knotted asymmetrical knotting, natural colour variations known as abrash, and traditional tribal symbology.
