Description

An absolutely gorgeous antique figured walnut chest of drawers. This was made in England, we would date it to around the 1890-1900 period, possibly earlier.

It is of superb quality and has a stunning patina, the walnut has a beautiful colour tone and wonderful grain patterns. The drawer fronts have double herringbone banding around the edges, there are beautifully cast brass handles and escutcheons. This stands on bracket feet and the top is also cross banded.

We have had this recently re-polished, it is in lovely condition for its age. There is just some minor wear and age related patina remaining beneath the polish.

To look at inside & out, this chest of drawers looks like & is constructed like a period 18th century piece, because it’s that well made.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Walnut furniture gained prominence during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, particularly during the William and Mary and Queen Anne periods, prized for its rich grain and warm tone.

Maintain walnut furniture by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources, and apply microcrystalline wax periodically to nourish the wood without sealing it with synthetic finishes.

Pairing historical timber furniture with contemporary neutral walls, minimalist lighting, and abstract art creates a balanced aesthetic that highlights the natural grain and craftsmanship of the piece.

Authentication involves examining the timber patination, hand-cut dovetails, original brass hardware or fixings, and observing the natural shrinkage and oxidisation of the wood over centuries.

Authentic pieces typically feature solid oak or pine secondary timbers with figured walnut veneers applied to the exterior surfaces, constructed using hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer frames.
