Description

Size: 4ft 1in x 2ft 4in (124 x 70cm) each.

A good pair of antique Yomut Turkmen asmalyk with lattice design.

2nd half 19th century.

This pair are a good example of a Yomut Turkmen asmalyk, they have an ivory ground with a lattice design which contains the erre gul. The ivory ground border is very well drawn and contains a classic Yomut bird design, note the so called 'bow tie' outer border.

Asmalyk were used to decorate the flanks of the camels in the Yomut Turkmen wedding procession, they usually formed part of the brides dowry and were woven in pairs.

The weave is very fine and the asmalyk have a soft floppy handle.

The asmalyk are in good condition with even wear and medium pile.

The asmalyk have been hand washed and is ready for display.

An asmalyk is a pentagonal or five-sided trapping traditionally woven by Yomut Turkmen tribes as part of a brides dowry, often used to decorate the flanks of a camel during wedding processions.

These textiles were typically constructed using hand-spun sheeps wool for the pile and foundation, often incorporating camel hair or cotton highlights, and dyed using natural colourants like madder root for reds and indigo for dark blues.

Authentic pieces from the second half of the 19th century display irregular hand-spun warps and wefts, natural colour variations known as abrash, saturated natural dyes, and characteristic tribal guls or geometric motifs unique to the Yomut confederation.

These dynamic pieces can be mounted on linen or stretched on panels to be displayed as textile art on walls, adding rich texture and historical depth to modern or minimalist spaces.

Preservation involves keeping the textiles out of direct sunlight to prevent fading, mounting them without putting undue stress on the wool fibres, and periodically vacuuming gently through a mesh screen with low suction.
