Four Georgian Reverse Painted Prints On Glass

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Prometheus Antiques

A very interesting group of four reverse painted prints on glass depicting scenes from the story of Robinson Crusoe. The prints come from a series of twelve depicting various scenes from the book, and were print around 1795 by Bowles and Carver who were highly success London printmakers of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century. This series of prints was likely some of the first the partnership produced. The four prints are each titled: Robinson Crusoe carrying away on his raft the most useful remains of the wreck, Robinson Crusoe and the crew escaping from the wreck in the longboat, Robinson Crusoe astonished at the print of a foot, and Robinson Crusoe and Friday shooting the savages. The prints are each in very good condition and beautifully coloured. The group are mounted in what is likely to be the original frames, these are ebonised pine which has worn beautifully with age. The set has a group period look and are incredibly rare and unusual. C.1795.
