Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE REGENCY ERA:
Mezzotint transfer onto glass: late Georgian method for popular commemorative portraits.
Moulded ebonised frame with softened corners: typical framing from the early 1800s.
Gentle discolouration and varnish ageing behind glass: normal behaviour of early organic adhesives.
Engraved titling along lower margin: period publishing practice celebrating Napoleonic War commanders.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This Regency wall art piece is a reverse glass print depicting Archduke Charles of Austria in a military uniform, holding a sword and leading Austrian troops into battle towards a fortified hill. The artwork is set within a dark ebonised wooden frame with simple linear mouldings framing the glass panel, showing surface wear and patina consistent with age. At the lower edge, an engraved title inscription reads "ARCH DUKE CHARLES OF AUSTRIA" against a pale greenish-blue background, complemented by tones of red, black, and natural pigments within the painted scene. The object measures 40.75 cm high and 30.5 cm wide. In a contemporary home, this Georgian piece is well suited for placement on a narrow wall space within a gentleman's library or study. The dark timber moulding and historical military subject matter provide a traditional accent for an interior wall display, hung individually or paired with other period artwork.

A reverse glass print is a technique popular in the 18th and early 19th centuries where an engraved print was transferred face-down onto glass, made translucent with oil or varnish, and then hand-painted from behind.

Craftsmen utilised flat sheet glass, oil pigments, varnish, and a paper copperplate engraving, housed within a simple dark-stained wooden frame to secure the paint layers.

Authentic period examples exhibit natural age-related paint crazing, slight flaking or shrinkage of the painted backing, subtle air bubbles within the hand-blown glass, and original wooden backboards.

Display this artwork in a study or hallway as part of a curated gallery wall, or rest it on a bookshelf alongside brass decorative objects and leather-bound books.

Dust the front glass surface gently using a dry microfibre cloth, keeping liquid cleansers and moisture away from the frame edges to prevent damage to the backing paint.
