Description

An antique oil on opaque glass painting of an armorial crest and motto, probably mid 19thC c1850. The glass has been turned into a diamond shape so that the crest can be painted on vertically, and it been framed accordingly. The crest has four quarters, two depicting a crowned female head against black and gold and two depicting what appear to be wheatsheafs either side of a band of foliage. It suggests a union between a landed family and a royal or aristocratic family. The quartered shield is topped by a helmeted head and a standing lion. The motto appears at the base. The crest is surrounded by drapes and tassels. The colours are especially pleasing green, cream, tan, plum. The oil has been quite thickly applied, giving a slightly unsophisticated but pleasing result. The condition is excellent. I have opened the back and cleaned the front glazing and back of the opaque older glass. It is a wonderful unusual antique find.

These works were created using the reverse glass painting technique, where oil pigments were applied directly onto the back of a glass pane in reverse sequence, starting with fine details and finishing with background tones.
