Chenets, also known as fire dogs, are ornamental metal supports placed in a fireplace to elevate logs for better airflow. They gained significant artistic prominence in France during the Renaissance and reached high levels of craftsmanship through the Baroque and Neoclassical periods.

Traditional chenets were predominantly manufactured from cast bronze, brass, or iron, often finished with mercury gilding, commonly referred to as ormolu. Artisans used lost-wax casting methods to achieve intricate sculptural details and fine surface chased finishes.

Authenticity is typically assessed by examining the weight of the bronze, the depth and precision of the hand-chased surface details, and the presence of historical casting seams or screw threads. Genuine mercury gilding displays a distinct matte and bright golden lustre that differs significantly from modern electroplate.

These decorative objects serve as sculptural focal points within a fireplace hearth, adding metallic warmth and historical contrast to minimalist or modern mantelpieces. They can also be displayed independently on large consoles or within unused fire boxes as architectural art pieces.

Ormolu and gilt bronze surfaces should be cleaned solely with a soft, dry microfibre cloth to remove dust. Harsh chemical cleaners, abrasives, or metal polishes must be strictly avoided, as they can permanently strip the delicate gold layer from the base metal.
