This painted French commode dates from 1860 in the French Provincial style, constructed from oak with a pale grey painted finish and brass hardware. The piece presents a rectangular top above a bank of drawers arranged with two smaller drawers over three full-width drawers below. The drawer fronts display recessed carved panels, and the front corners incorporate turned fluted columns terminating in turned block feet. The surface exhibits a distressed appearance with visible wear and chippiness to the pale grey paint over the timber. Brass escutcheons are set centrally on the lower drawers, and pairs of decorative brass drop handles are fitted to each drawer front. Measuring 84 cm high, 110 cm wide, and 51 cm deep, this chest of drawers offers practical storage for a bedroom, hallway, or living space. The traditional proportions allow placement against a wall to provide surface display area alongside enclosed storage capacity within the drawers.

The French commode emerged in the late 17th century as a low cabinet with drawers designed to stand against a wall, replacing the traditional chest for bedroom and salon storage.

Traditional French commodes were constructed using hardwoods such as oak, fruitwood, or walnut, often fitted with cast brass hardware and finished with hand-applied painted glazes.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, cast brass hardware displaying natural patination, structural contraction lines in the timber, and genuine paint wear concentrated on high-contact edges.

A painted commode provides textural contrast in modern settings when positioned as a focal point in hallways, dining spaces, or bedrooms beneath contemporary artwork or mirrors.

Maintain the finish by dusting with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding water-based or abrasive cleaners, and positioning the item away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight.
