This nineteenth-century French Neoclassical commode is a three-drawer chest of drawers in warm brown walnut timber veneer with a grey marble top. The piece stands on square tapered feet and includes circular brass escutcheons with drop rings on each of the drawers, reflecting a French Chateau style design. The surfaces display a clean, polished finish. The furniture measures 86 cm high, 136 cm wide, and 60 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this chest of drawers provides functional storage surface space suitable for living areas, bedrooms, or hallways. The neutral grey and warm timber tones coordinate with various interior colour palettes while offering a practical surface for display or daily use.

A commode is a low, wide chest of drawers that originated in early 18th-century France. Incorporating a stone or marble slab on top protected the timber surface from everyday wear and liquids, making it a functional piece for reception rooms and bedrooms.

These storage pieces were typically constructed using native hardwoods such as oak, walnut, or fruitwood, often decorated with wood veneers. Marble tops were sourced from regional European quarries and paired with cast brass or bronze handles and escutcheons.

Authentic antique commodes usually feature hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer linings, hand-planed back panels, and cast brass hardware. Inspecting the underside of the stone top often reveals unpolished, hand-chiseled marble.

Position the commode as a focal storage piece in a hallway or bedroom, balancing its visual weight with modern artwork framed directly above it. Keep tabletop accessories minimal using a singular ceramic vessel or lamp to highlight the natural marble texture.

Clean the marble slab using a damp cloth with mild, pH-neutral soap, avoiding acidic cleaners that damage the natural stone. Treat the timber carcass with beeswax polish to nourish the wood grain and preserve the existing finish.
