This nineteenth-century French Empire style commode in rich brown rosewood brings classic refinement to a principal bedroom, hallway or formal drawing room. The piece stands 87 cm high, 132 cm wide and 60 cm deep. A smooth, chip-free grey veined Italian marble top crowns the cabinet, complemented by fine quality ormolu mounts, horizontal guilloche brass moulding, circular ring pull drawer handles, and square tapered legs finished with brass sabots. The angular timber construction features a deep polished gloss finish that highlights the warm grain of the rosewood. Practical storage is provided through wide drawers beneath the marble surface and a generous enclosed lower cabinet secured with a central ormolu escutcheon.

Originating during the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte in the early nineteenth century, Empire style furniture features Neoclassical symmetry, bold architectural forms, dark exotic wood veneers, and ornate gilt bronze mounts inspired by ancient Roman, Greek, and Egyptian design.

Cabinetmakers primarily utilised rich flame mahogany or rosewood veneers over oak or pine carcases. Tops were frequently finished with heavy, polished marble slabs, while decorative accents and handles were executed in chased gilt bronze or brass.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, hand-sawn back panels, heavy cast gilt bronze mounts with mercury gilding or natural patination, and thick solid marble tops showing natural inclusions rather than uniform modern composites.

Place the piece against a neutral wall to highlight the rich rosewood grain and gilt detailing, framing it with modern art or contemporary lamps to create a balanced contrast between historic architecture and modern design.

Dust the wood veneer regularly with a soft microfibre cloth and apply a natural bees wax sparingly once or twice a year, while keeping marble surfaces clean with pH-neutral cleaners to avoid dulling or staining the polished stone.
