Early 19th‑century French Empire Mahogany Commode, C.1810

19th century
Description

A fine French Empire mahogany commode dating to around 1810, crowned with a striking black marble top and arranged over three full‑width drawers. The drawer fronts display beautifully matched mahogany veneers laid over oak groundwork, each fitted with superb gilt‑bronze lion’s mask ring handles and leaf‑pattern escutcheons typical of the high Empire aesthetic.

The façade is framed by moulded square pilasters, while the piece stands on exceptional carved Egyptian‑inspired claw feet—bold, sculptural details that define the early Empire fascination with Classical antiquity. The sides are veneered in mahogany, and the drawers retain their original oak linings.

A strong, architectural commode with excellent presence, rich colour, and well‑preserved mounts, presenting all the hallmarks of early 19th‑century Parisian craftsmanship.

Developed during the reign of Napoleon I, French Empire style furniture features Neoclassical architectural forms, dark woods such as mahogany, polished marble surfaces, and gilt-bronze mounts inspired by ancient Greek, Roman, and Egyptian motifs.

Commodes from this period were predominantly constructed from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers over oak or pine frames, complemented by heavy marble tops and cast brass or bronze ormolu mounts.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints, hand-planed drawer linings, heavy cast ormolu fittings, original lock mechanisms, and naturally aged marble tops with hand-chiselled undersides.

A French Empire commode functions as an anchor piece in a hallway or bedroom, pairing well with contemporary artwork above the marble top or modern metallic accents that echo the brass fittings.

Dust wood surfaces with a dry microfibre cloth and apply beeswax sparingly; clean marble surfaces using a pH-neutral cleaner to prevent etching, and avoid abrasive polishes on gilt metal mounts.
