This 1850 French Louis Philippe style chest of drawers exemplifies nineteenth-century cabinet-making, constructed from flame mahogany veneer over an oak carcass with oak drawer linings. The exterior displays rich warm brown tones, complemented by a grey marble top and ornate brass keyhole escutcheons fitted to the three main drawers, the single top drawer, and the pull-out brushing slide. Simple moulded cornices frame the piece above four graduated drawers, while visible signs of age appear on the sides which require reviving. Measuring 98 cm high, 117 cm wide, and 57 cm deep, this practical storage item sits comfortably in a bedroom or hallway, providing a flat surface for display alongside concealed storage.

Originating in 18th-century France, the commode was developed as a substantial piece of case furniture featuring low drawers, designed to sit against a wall. By the 19th century, particularly during the Empire and Louis Philippe periods, cabinetmakers incorporated rich mahogany veneers, fitted marble tops, and pull-out slides for both aesthetic elegance and functional versatility.

Commodes from this era typically feature secondary pine or oak carcasses veneered with high-grade flame mahogany. Tops were fitted with heavy, hand-cut marble slabs, often dark grey or white, whilst drawer handles and keyhole escutcheons were cast in brass.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, thick hand-cut veneers, and original lock mechanisms with period keyholes. The marble top usually features a unpolished, rough-chiselled underside with natural age-related character, resting directly on the wooden frame without modern adhesives.

Contrast the deep wood tones and natural marble top by mounting contemporary modern art or a streamlined mirror above the piece. Incorporate minimal table lamps or sculptural ceramics on top to balance historical craftsmanship with modern interior design.

Dust the wood surface regularly with a soft, clean cloth and apply beeswax twice yearly following the wood grain. Clean the marble top using a pH-neutral cleaner, avoiding acidic chemicals, and wipe away spills immediately to prevent staining.
