Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1900s:
Mottled reddish-brown patination: natural surface oxidisation on Japanese cast bronze.
Verdigris crusting inside the basin: long-term exposure to moisture.
Fine silver-coloured crackle inlay: metalwork fashion popular in late Meiji Japan.
Subtle handling wear along the flared rim: many years of domestic use.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Japanese Meiji period art bronze jardiniere dates from 1900. The piece takes the form of a large dark brown vessel with a patinated finish, complete with a flared rim, a circular pedestal base, and double loop handles. The body carries finely engraved incised leaf vein patterns and simulated crack decorations across the surface. Measuring 31 cm high, 40 cm wide, and 40 cm deep, the jardiniere provides substantial scale for contemporary settings. Suitable for placement atop a sideboard or within a gentleman's library, the vessel holds large plants or stands alone as a decorative statement piece. The dark patinated bronze brings a traditional aesthetic to living spaces, reception rooms, or studies, integrating easily with classic or eclectic interior schemes. The sturdy construction ensures stability on flat surfaces throughout the home.

FAQs

Maintain the surface by dusting regularly with a dry, soft microfiber cloth. Avoid water, liquid polishes, or abrasive cleaners that can strip the delicate chemical patina; a thin coat of microcrystalline wax can be applied periodically to protect the metal finish.

A bronze jardiniere functions as a substantial tabletop accent on sideboards, consoles, or wide window sills. It can be displayed empty as a decorative sculptural object or used to hold potted houseplants and dried botanical arrangements.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit significant weight relative to their size, natural patina wear in handled or rimmed areas, and precise surface engraving. Many examples feature foundry marks or artist signatures stamped or incised on the underside of the base.

These vessels were typically cast in bronze using lost-wax or sand-casting techniques. Details such as handles and raised bases were often cast separately and attached, followed by hand-incising or chasing for surface detail and chemical patination to achieve deep brown or dark red finishes.

During Japans Meiji period (18681912), traditional samurai sword makers and foundry artisans transitioned to creating decorative art objects for domestic display and international export. Japanese bronzes from this era are recognized for advanced lost-wax casting methods, detailed surface chasing, and complex patination techniques.
