Austrian Cold Painted Bronze Figure of an Antelope

1900 - 1920
Description

A fine and unusual cold painted bronze figure of an antelope. The piece is beautifully modelled and an excellent example of the type. The figure is very unusual being an antelope with is curved horns. The painted decoration is all original and in good condition just with the usual slight wear. It would have been originally mounted on a marble base. The work is of a good size and nice weight and shows quality craftsmanship throughout. It is not marked though it certainly is of the quality of the famous cold painted bronze maker Franz Bergman. C.1900.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Cold-painted bronze refers to cast bronze figures that were decorated with layers of unfired enamel or oil paint. Developed predominantly in Vienna in the late nineteenth century, these pieces are famous for their naturalistic detail and hand-painted polychrome finishes.

Foundries used lost-wax casting to produce detailed hollow bronze figures. Craftsmen then applied multiple layers of paint to the cold metal surface without firing, allowing for precise rendering of fur, feather, or hide textures.

Authentic period examples feature sharp casting details, fine cold-tooling on hair or fur, and evidence of wear on high points where the original unfired paint layer has naturally worn away to reveal the underlying bronze patina.

Display the sculpture on an elevated surface such as a bookshelf, mantelpiece, or executive desk alongside leather-bound books or muted stone accents to highlight its warm metallic undertones and rich surface texture.

Dust the surface lightly using a dry, soft-bristled brush. Avoid liquid cleaners, chemical polishes, and water, as humidity and solvent exposure can dissolve or lift the delicate, unfired paint layers.
