Cloisonne is an ancient metalworking technique where vitreous enamel paste is applied into compartments formed by thin copper or brass wire strips soldered onto a metal vessel.

Traditional cloisonne is constructed with a beaten copper or brass body, fitted with hand-shaped metal wires to form design cells, and filled with coloured mineral enamel pastes before firing and polishing.

Authentic period pieces display hand-bent copper wires, slight surface pinholes or unevenness in the enamel glaze from hand polishing, and natural oxidation on un-enamelled brass rims.

Positioning a lidded cloisonne jar on a console table, sideboard, or open shelving adds texture, colour contrast, and historical balance to contemporary schemes.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth and avoid using water or chemical cleaners, which can enter microscopic pores and oxidise the underlying metal wires.
