Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A twin pedestal desk is a style of office furniture consisting of a flat writing top supported by two vertical column cabinets or drawer units, creating a central opening known as a kneehole. Popularised in the 18th and 19th centuries, these desks provide substantial storage alongside a practical work surface.

Nineteenth-century pedestal desks were typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or oak, often featuring hand-cut dovetail joints and solid drawer linings. The upper writing surfaces were frequently inset with gold-tooled or blind-tooled leather to cushion writing instruments and protect the wood.

Authentic 19th-century desks generally exhibit hand-sawn timber marks, hand-cut dovetails on the drawer construction, and period-appropriate brass or iron locks. Natural wear along the plinth base and hand-carved decorative details such as turned columns or panelled doors also indicate period authenticity.

Integrate a mahogany pedestal desk into a modern study by pairing it with a tailored leather desk chair and contemporary lighting fixtures. Positioning the dark timber against neutral walls or light-coloured flooring highlights the historical wood grain while maintaining a balanced space.

Dust the mahogany frame regularly using a dry microfibre cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish along the grain once or twice a year. Keep the desk away from direct heat sources to prevent timber cracking, and clean the leather surface with a gentle dedicated leather conditioner.
