Antique Karaja Runner

1900 - 1920
Description

A very beautiful Antique Karaja runner woven with faded brick red tones, a light golden sand coloured border, lots of pale blues and soft pinks.  Classical and well drawn 6 star motifs down the centre of the runner provide great symmetry.  For a tribal runner, it has been woven by an expert weaver as the proportions of the pattern have been well executed.

The condition is very nice, a thick wool pile and all showing, a lovely, tough, and durable antique runner over 120 years old.  Rare to find a narrow long size and in excellent order.

We offer the professional service of viewing any of our carpets & rugs in-situ by appointment or you are very welcome to visit our barn showroom in Crondall, Surrey.  Request a home visit to see this exceptional antique Karaja runner at home at a convenient time for you.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Karaja runners originate from the Heriz region in North-West Iran and are distinguished by their geometric patterns, tribal motifs, and deep colour palettes. They typically feature a repeating pattern of geometric medallions along a narrow central field.

These runners are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile woven onto a durable cotton foundation. Traditional pieces utilize natural plant dyes to achieve rich tones of terracotta red, indigo blue, and cream.

Authentic Karaja textiles are recognisable by their distinctive arrangement of alternating geometric medallions along the central axis, often featuring a square medallion flanked by octagonal shapes. The weave uses symmetrical Turkish knots creating a heavy, sturdy feel.

A geometric Persian runner introduces depth and texture when placed in a neutral hallway, entry corridor, or alongside a bed. The rich colours contrast effectively against modern timber or stone flooring.

Vacuum regularly using a suction-only setting to prevent damage to the natural wool fibres and fringe ends. Rotate the rug periodically to ensure even wear, and arrange professional rug cleaning when deep maintenance is needed.
