Description

A nice quality Victorian walnut pedestal desk c1870. The desk is laid with a burgundy gilt tooled leather surface. The drawers are oak lined with original brass handles of the Victorian Aesthetic era c1870 and locks. The pedestals stand on original china castors so the desk can be easily moved. The back of the pedestal is polished walnut so the desk can stand against or away from a wall. The colour is a lovely mid chestnut. There is a pinprick mark in the burgundy leather visible in the last photo but this is a minute drawback in an overall beautiful piece. The desk separates into three parts so is easy to transport and fit into place.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Victorian pedestal desks emerged during the 19th century as functional writing and administrative furniture, evolving from earlier partner and kneehole desks to suit the expanding bureaucratic needs of the era.

These desks were typically constructed from solid timbers such as walnut, mahogany, or oak, featuring dovetail joints in the drawers, brass hardware, and inset leather writing surfaces with gilt tooling.

Authenticity is identified through hand-cut dovetailing, period-appropriate timber grain, traditional brass locks and handles, hand-tooled leather inserts, and signs of genuine age-related wear and patination.

Pair the traditional wooden desk with modern minimalist seating, contemporary lighting, and neutral surroundings to create a balanced study space that highlights the craftsmanship of the piece.

Maintain the timber by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth, and occasionally applying appropriate natural waxes to nourish the wood.
