60 X 60cm Antique Kurdish Saddlebag

1900 - 1920
Description

Stunning colour in this late 19th or early 20th century West Persian saddlebag. The Kurds were famous for their ability to produce, and juxtapose, the richest natural dyes known to man, and this is what made their utilitarian objects so popular with collectors in the West. This is one of the most colourful bags of this type, with an extraordinary light blue, bright gold and rich coral red, coupled with the highly patinated wool that collectors are on the look out for. With the original back, crafted with a deceptively simple blend of similar colours and one contrasting, it is a superb piece of art.

Would make a fabulous pillow.

In excellent condition, full pile, the only repairs being circular, 'granny' style overcasting to protect the remains of the closure tabs

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Kurdish saddlebags, traditionally known as khorjin, are hand-woven tribal textiles created by nomadic Kurdish weavers to transport goods across pack animals. These functional objects feature pile-woven fronts for durability and flat-woven backs, often displaying distinct tribal geometric motifs.

Traditional Kurdish saddlebags are constructed entirely from hand-spun wool dyed using natural vegetable and plant sources. The front panels feature hand-knotted wool pile on a wool warp and weft, while woven loops along the edge were used to secure the bag closed during transit.

Authentic antique Kurdish textiles are identified by their thick wool foundations, saturated naturally dyed colour palettes featuring deep blues and madder reds, and geometric iconography. Structural details like natural abrash colour variations and hand-bound edges are key indicators of nomadic origin.

Antique saddlebag faces are frequently mounted and framed as textile art or displayed directly as decorative wall hangings. Alternatively, designers often convert these durable woven panels into custom accent cushions for armchairs or sofas to introduce colour and texture.

Vacuum the wool textile gently without using a rotating beater bar to prevent damage to the fibres. Position the piece away from direct sunlight to prevent natural dyes from fading, and consult a professional textile conservator for specialist cleaning.
