Georgian Walnut Featherbanded Lowboy with Quarter Veneered Top

18th century
Description

An elegant antique featherbanded walnut lowboy dating from the late George I or early George II era, with shapely cabriole legs, three oak lined drawers, and a quarter veneered top. The lowboy is veneered in beautifully figured walnut and has a wonderful rich colour.

This beautifully proportioned 18th century walnut lowboy is compact in size and, in my opinion, a thing of beauty. It is thought that lowboys were probably made as dressing tables, but they are most commonly used now as side tables. This one has some lovely details, including the gently rounded corners to the top and the delicate feather-banding to the drawers and top

Condition: This little table is in good condition overall, and appears to have been well looked after throughout its life, though of course at around 300 years old there are some signs of wear. There are some marks to the top where it has had things standing on it, and some indented scratch marks (some probably caused by a child), but these just add to its patina. The rest of the lowboy has a few very minor marks and scuffs, but nothing of significance. In terms of damage, there is a small crack to the veneer on the top, and a small area of loss to the feather-banding in this area. The only other area of damage is to the left hand front corner above the leg where there is a repaired split to both sides of the corner, and an area of replaced veneer on the side. I think this has probably been caused by movement in the structure which has cracked the veneer, but it all seems stable now. There is an area of replaced veneer on the back edge of the left hand side, but this blends in well. The handles appear to be original.

A lowboy is a small table fitted with drawers, originating in early 18th-century England during the Georgian and Queen Anne periods. Designed primarily as a dressing table or writing desk, it features decorative veneers, a shaped apron, and elevated cabriole legs.

Georgian lowboys were predominantly constructed from solid walnut and figure-matched walnut veneers, such as quarter-veneering and burr walnut. Inlays like featherbanding or herringbone stringing were applied around drawer borders, complemented by cast brass handles and escutcheons.

Authentic period pieces display hand-cut dovetail joints inside drawer construction, naturally aged oxidisation on untreated timber undersides, and irregular hand-saw marks. Original surfaces exhibit a soft, uneven patina alongside hand-forged iron nails or wooden peg joinery.

An antique lowboy serves effectively as an entryway console table, a hallway accent piece, or a compact desk in a bedroom. Pairing the warm timber tones with contemporary artwork or a minimalist table lamp creates a balanced, layered interior aesthetic.

Maintain walnut furniture by applying a natural beeswax polish twice yearly to preserve moisture and protect the grain finish. Keep the piece away from direct sunlight, central heating radiators, and damp environments to prevent timber movement, cracking, or veneer lifting.
