This World War II era paperweight is a commemorative bronze sculpture mounted on a circular black marble plinth. The metallic elements display a dark bronze finish, contrasting with the dark stone base which reveals a couple of very small chips along the lower edge. Modelled in a gentleman's library style, the decorative arrangement comprises a central upright laurel wreath intersecting a telescope, alongside an open book and a scroll resting on a detailed ground. The sculpture measures 8 cm high, 9 cm wide, and 9 cm deep. Placed on an office desk or a study table, the piece functions practically as a paperweight while serving as a decorative desk accessory.

During the mid-20th century, cast metal desk ornaments and paperweights were frequently commissioned to commemorate military units, service personnel, or notable conflict milestones. These items served functional roles in offices and studies while symbolizing military achievements and remembrance.

These desk objects were predominantly cast in solid bronze, brass, or spelter metal, often finished with a dark patina or chemical oxidisation. The metal components were typically mounted onto polished dark marble, slate, or hardwood bases to add weight and stability.

Authentic period examples exhibit crisp cast details, natural surface patination from handling, and age-appropriate wear on the underside of the base. Look for cast foundry marks, sharp definition in relief details like wreaths and books, and historical casting techniques.

A historical bronze paperweight can be positioned on an office desk, styled atop stacked hardcover books, or displayed within a library bookcase to add texture and historical context to a room.

Maintain the surface by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth. Avoid chemical polishes or abrasive cleaners that can remove the original surface patina, and apply a thin layer of microcrystalline wax annually to protect the metal finish.
