Transferware pottery emerged in England during the late 18th century, utilising a copper-plate printing process to transfer detailed engravings onto ceramic bodies. This technique allowed manufacturers to produce intricate pictorial scenes efficiently, becoming highly popular across domestic and export markets.

These pieces are typically crafted from earthenware or ironstone ceramics, glazed with a tin or lead-based clear coat. Cobalt oxide was the primary pigment used to achieve the characteristic deep blue coloration under the glaze before firing at high temperatures.

Authenticity is determined by examining crazing in the glaze, manufacturing spur marks on the base, weight, and consistency of the transfer print. Makers marks, impressed stamps, or pattern names printed on the underside often provide definitive attribution to specific potteries.

Antique plates can be mounted on walls as a focal art installation, displayed upright in open shelving units, or arranged on plate stands atop sideboards and mantelpieces to introduce historical texture and pattern into contemporary spaces.

Antique plates require gentle hand washing in lukewarm water with mild detergent; dishwashers must be avoided to prevent accelerated crazing and damage to the glaze. Sudden temperature fluctuations should also be avoided to protect the ceramic body from cracking.
