Cotswold Oriental Rugs has dated this piece to the 1900s.
Antique salt-bag by the nomads of the Varamin region of central Persia, south of Tehran.
Circa 1900.
This is a good example of Varamin salt-bag in piled weave with a panelled floral design.
Salt-bags were used by the nomads to store and carry rock salt, both for their own use and for their animals; salt was a very valuable item and it therefore deserved to be stored in these beautiful bags which are usually so tightly woven as to be almost waterproof.
The salt bag is in excellent condition with very slight even wear and a few signs of use.
The bag face has been hand washed and is ready for display.
