Antique Shahsavan saddle bag face in soumak technique.

Circa 1870.

An outstanding soumak bag face in a classic Shahsavan design with stylised birds and dragons , superb natural dyes throughout.

The bag face is in outstanding original condition with very slight wear and no repairs.

The bag face has been hand washed and is ready for display. An outstanding and collectable example.

Shahsevan Soumak bag faces are flatwoven tribal textiles created by the nomadic Shahsevan people of Azerbaijan and northwest Persia, originally forming the decorative front panel of storage bags or bedding sacks.

Soumak is a flatweave technique where supplementary coloured thread wraps over and under structural warp threads, creating a dense, brocaded geometric pattern on the front and loose yarns on the reverse.

Authentic 19th-century Shahsevan pieces feature hand-spun wool warp and weft yarns, natural plant and mineral dyes, geometric animal and talismanic motifs, and characteristic wrap-weave construction.
