This antique Shahsavan saddle bag face dates from 1870 and belongs to the tribal textiles category in a Shahsavan tribal and Caucasian style. Woven in hand-spun wool with vegetable dyes, the textile presents a navy blue background decorated with cream and terracotta red stylised dragon and bird motifs, alongside a floral rosette border and geometric borders with fringe at the top and bottom. The bag face displays very slight wear with no repairs and measures 52 cm high, 51 cm wide, and 1 cm deep. In a modern home, this piece is suitable for display on a wall as a decorative textile panel.

A Shahsavan Soumak bag face is a decorative woven panel originally forming the front of a storage bag or mafrash used by the nomadic Shahsavan tribe of northwestern Iran and the Caucasus. These pieces feature intricate flatweave constructions using the Soumak technique, characterised by wrapped weft threads creating detailed geometric and zoomorphic patterns.

Soumak textiles are created using a supplementary-weft flatweaving technique where coloured pattern threads are wrapped over and under the warp threads. Natural hand-spun wool coloured with vegetable dyes is predominantly used, producing a textured, durable surface with a flat structure.

Authentic 19th-century Shahsavan pieces feature natural dyes, hand-spun wool, and traditional iconography such as stylized birds, dragons, and geometric rosettes. The reverse side exhibits loose, floating pattern threads characteristic of true Soumak weaving, along with clear colour saturation and fine weave density.

Antique tribal textiles can be custom framed and mounted as tactile wall art, converted into accent cushions for modern seating, or displayed across wooden surfaces to introduce colour, pattern, and historical texture to a room scheme.

To preserve antique flatweaves, keep them positioned away from direct sunlight to prevent dye fading, and maintain stable humidity levels. Surface dust should be removed by light suction without a rotating brush, and specialised conservation cleaning should be used for deeper maintenance.
