How do I care for rosewood?

Rosewood surfaces respond best to regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth and occasional feeding with quality beeswax to preserve the natural oils in the timber. Keep these desks away from direct sunlight and strong heat sources to prevent the dark tropical wood from fading or the veneers from lifting over time.

Can these desks stand in a room centre?

Many nineteenth-century examples feature fully finished backs, meaning the timber grain and detailing continue all the way around the piece for open-room placement. Such freestanding capability makes them ideal for positioning in the middle of a library or study rather than pushed flat against a wall.

How do I distinguish Regency from Victorian examples?

Regency desks typically display sharper classical restraint, often incorporating bold brass inlay and architectural proportions derived from ancient Roman or Greek designs. Victorian pieces lean towards heavier carved decoration, intricate marquetry patterns, and darker finishes that reflect the industrial expansion of furniture production.

What is a partners desk?

A partners desk is built with working drawers and cupboards accessible from both sides, allowing two individuals to sit opposite one another while working. These pieces represent the largest scale of pedestal desk and usually feature expansive leather writing surfaces bordered by solid timber.
