How do I date a burr walnut vanity box?

Dating relies on construction methods, lock types, and interior styles characteristic of Victorian or later periods. Earlier pieces often feature hand-cut dovetails and simpler brass hardware. Examining the secondary woods and the style of the mirror supports provides further clues to the decade of manufacture.

Were these pieces used by men or women?

Both gentlemen and ladies used burr walnut vanity items for daily grooming and travel. Gentlemen's cases typically housed shaving gear and razors, while ladies' boxes held cosmetics and brushes. Dressing tables served the same personal care routines within the bedroom setting.

How should I care for burr walnut veneer?

Protect the wood from direct sunlight and excessive humidity to prevent the delicate veneer from lifting or fading. Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth maintains the natural lustre. Avoid using modern silicone polishes, opting instead for traditional beeswax applied sparingly.

What is the difference between a vanity box and a dressing table?

A vanity box is a portable case designed for travel or tabletop use, containing fitted compartments for smaller items. A dressing table is a permanent piece of bedroom furniture with an integrated mirror. Both utilise the same decorative burr walnut veneers for visual impact.
