This nineteenth-century Black Forest fire screen is a carved oak piece in a Victorian and Gothic style, dating to circa 1880. The structure exhibits a medium brown timber finish, featuring scrollwork framing, foliage motifs, and a carved bird finial surmounting the top, supported by carved tripod legs with scrolled feet. Set within the central frame is a replaced tapestry panel displaying a green, red, and beige pineapple pattern, with the original tapestry positioned underneath. The construction incorporates detailed wood carving, turned elements, and complex mouldings along the border. Expected minor repairs to the woodwork are present on the frame. Measuring 99.5 cm high, 66.5 cm wide, and 37 cm deep, the fire screen is suited for placement on a fireplace hearth in a reception room or living space to protect from open flames. The freestanding design allows positioning directly in front of a working fireplace.

Originating in the 19th century in Switzerland and Germany, these pieces were designed to shield occupants from the direct heat of an open fire while serving as hearth accessories. They typically feature hand-carved frames inspired by wildlife, foliage, and natural motifs.

These screens were predominantly crafted from dense hardwoods such as oak, walnut, or lime wood, which allowed for intricate carving. The central panel frequently featured needlepoint, woven tapestry, or silk textiles set within the frame.

Authentic pieces exhibit high-relief hand carving with visible tool marks and organic variations. The wood shows natural age patina, historical joinery techniques such as mortise and tenon joints, and wear consistent with placement near a hearth.

Position the screen on a fireplace hearth or inside an unused fireplace opening to create a structural focal point. It can also be placed in a room corner or alcove as an accent piece displaying historic wood carving and textiles.

Keep the piece away from active moisture or direct heat to prevent wood movement and fabric degradation. Dust the carved frame regularly using a soft brush and apply microcrystalline wax sparingly to protect the wood finish.
