Description

This charming mid-20th-century portrait by Belgian artist René Choprix (1888-1972) depicts a girl with a doll. It’s a sensitive portrayal and it’s probably his granddaughter.

Choprix is primarily known for his work during the Art Deco period, stylish, angular, blocky figure compositions. But later in his career, his works became somewhat quieter. It’s easy to imagine a doting grandfather producing this gentle image.

Choprix studied at the Académie des Beaux-Arts, Brussels.

Signed, dated, framed and glazed.

Pastel drawing involves using powdered pigment sticks bound with gum or resin to create highly textured and pigmented artworks on paper, known for their velvety finish and luminous colour depth.

Authentic period pieces typically utilise dry pigment pastels or chalk on textured art papers, often mounted behind protective glass within wooden or gesso frames to prevent smudging and degradation.

Authenticity is indicated by the presence of loose pigment dust under magnification, paper ageing characteristics, hand-mixed pigments, and often period framing alongside artist signatures or stamps.

Pair framed historical artworks with clean-walled gallery spaces or neutral backgrounds to let the traditional texture and character stand out as a sophisticated focal point.

Pastels must remain hermetically sealed behind glass with acid-free backing boards, and kept completely away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent fading and mould growth.
