Description

This spectacular Oushak carpet is as good as it gets. Woven in the last quarter of the 19th century, it would fit equally well in modern homes with both modern and traditional furniture. Fine hand spun wool and natural dyes are combined to create a carpet with a restrained repeating palmette design, all framed by an equally elegant border. Note the lovely soft terracotta background and the lovely golds, green and blues. The border is also very attractive, and frames the field very well. Some minor restoration has taken place in my own workshop but to a very high standard. Professionally cleaned and ready for immediate use.

Date of Manufacture

Aaron Nejad Carpets and Rugs has dated this Antique Oushak Carpet to the 1880s.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Oushak carpets originate from the town of Usak in western Turkey, which has been a major centre for rug production since the Ottoman Empire. Known for their softer palette, oversized motifs, and fine wool, these carpets were traditionally woven for palaces, mosques, and elite European residences.

Authentic antique Oushak carpets are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool for both the pile and the foundation. Natural dyes derived from plants, roots, and insects were traditionally used to create the characteristic muted, harmonious colour tones.

Authentic pieces exhibit variations in colour known as abris, resulting from natural dye batches, along with hand-spun wool that has an irregular, textured feel. The knots on the reverse side should show consistent hand-knotting, and the fringe and selvedges should reflect traditional handmade construction methods.

A large antique carpet provides an anchor for contemporary or classic room schemes, contrasting clean architectural lines with organic textures and historic pattern. Layer it over plain wooden flooring to highlight its scale, muted colours, and intricate motifs as a focal point.

Vacuum regularly using a low-suction setting without a beater bar to protect the wool pile and fringe. Professional specialist cleaning is recommended every few years, and keeping the carpet out of direct sunlight prevents the natural dyes from fading.
