Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Arts and Crafts pedestal desk dates from 1890 and is constructed from ash with a warm amber colour. The piece has a light brown inset leather writing surface, seven drawers fitted with decorative brass drop handles, and open lower shelves positioned beneath the side pedestals. The construction incorporates turned corner supports beneath the side drawers and rectangular mouldings framing the drawer fronts. In practical terms, the desk measures 137 cm wide, 76 cm high, and 51 cm deep. It functions well as a workspace in a home study or library, providing surface area for writing alongside partitioned drawer storage for stationery and documents, while the lower tiers offer additional display or storage space.

FAQs

The Arts and Crafts movement emphasised handcraftsmanship, structural honesty, and the natural grain of timber over mass-produced ornamentation. Desks from this era often feature straight construction lines, functional drawer arrangements, and custom metalwork handles.

Solid ash and ash veneers were selected for their pronounced grain and durability, frequently paired with secondary woods like pine or oak for drawer linings. Decorative elements often included brass drop handles, inset leather writing surfaces, and solid wood corner supports.

Authentic pieces feature traditional joinery methods such as hand-cut dovetails on drawers and mortise-and-tenon frame joints. Look for visible timber figure, hand-fitted drawers, original brass hardware with age-appropriate oxidisation, and leather writing inserts.

A light timber ash desk contrasts well against deep contemporary wall shades or modern neutral interiors. Combining the structured silhouette of the desk with a modern desk lamp and an ergonomic or mid-century swivel chair creates a balanced home workspace.

Dust the timber surfaces regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply high-grade beeswax twice a year to preserve the wood finish. Clean leather top inserts using a damp cloth followed by a specialised leather conditioner, ensuring the desk is kept clear of direct heat sources.
