This African Benin bronze bust, dating from 1940, depicts a King figure cast using the traditional lost-wax method. The piece is rendered in an aged bronze and brass palette, showing a combination of dark metallic patination and polished golden tones across the face, eyes, and brow. Fine detailing includes a heavily patterned headdress, prominent scarification marks above the eyes, stylised almond-shaped eyes, and a high ringed neck collar featuring numerous horizontal bands. Protruding wire-like elements and horns extend upwards from the headdress and curve outwards from the temples. Natural casting holes and surface textures characteristic of the lost-wax process remain visible throughout the metal body. Measuring 35 cm high by 18 cm wide and 18 cm deep, the bust serves as a striking sculptural display piece. It sits securely on a sideboard top, making it a suitable decorative addition to a gentleman's library, hallway console table, or study. The heavy bronze construction provides stability for freestanding placement in a domestic setting.

Benin bronzes are metal sculptures originating from the historic Kingdom of Benin in West Africa, traditionally cast using the lost-wax technique to commemorate royal figures and ceremonial subjects.

These sculptures were crafted using the cire perdue or lost-wax casting technique, utilizing alloys of copper, brass, and bronze to achieve detailed facial features and textured neck rings.

Mid-20th-century examples often exhibit surface verdigris, natural oxidisation, casting seam variations, and distinct hand-chased relief patterns along the headdress and neck adornments.

Position the bust on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or bookshelf alongside understated contemporary objects to create a focused sculptural highlight within a room.

Dust the bronze surface regularly with a soft, dry cloth, avoiding water and chemical cleaning agents that could alter the natural patina or oxidisation.
