This small nineteenth-century Dutch provincial commode displays a distinctive bombé shape with three horizontal drawers stacked vertically. Each drawer front features a single central keyhole escutcheon and two small circular holes where handles are currently absent, awaiting replacement brass hardware. The entire wooden structure carries a distressed off-white painted finish with visible wear, exposing darker undertones along the edges and surfaces. Standing on carved claw feet at the front corners, the piece measures 83 cm high, 99 cm wide, and 57 cm deep. Within a contemporary home, this chest of drawers provides versatile storage for a bedroom, hallway, or living area. The neutral distressed finish blends seamlessly with both traditional and relaxed interior schemes, while the compact proportions fit comfortably against walls in smaller rooms. Items can be placed on the smooth top surface for display, and the three deep drawers accommodate folded garments, linens, or household accessories.

Dutch commodes from the 18th century are characterised by shaped or bombee sides, curved fronts, and carved feet, often reflecting Continental Baroque and Rococo influences. Painted finishes were frequently applied either originally or in subsequent centuries to lighten the wood tone for regional provincial interiors.

These pieces were typically constructed using native hardwoods such as oak or fruitwood, or softwoods like pine when intended for a painted finish. Drawer linings were commonly built from oak or pine, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints and iron or brass hardware.

Authentic period commodes display signs of hand-craftsmanship, including hand-planed back boards, irregular dovetail joints, and natural wood shrinkage along panel joints. Original paint, where present, often shows layered wear, chalky textures, and fine craquelure consistent with age.

A painted commode acts as a focal textural element against neutral modern walls. It pairs well with contemporary artwork above the top surface, minimalist table lamps, or structured modern ceramics to create visual balance between old and new elements.

Dust the surface regularly with a clean, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding water or liquid chemical cleaners that could lift delicate, historic paint layers. Position the item away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent wood movement and further paint flaking.
