Description

This is a Victorian mahogany sideboard of good quality.

Sorry about the shiny bit I took the pictures outside. and the sun caused dazells.

It does get sunny in Scotland now and again.

The pictures show the sideboard being built up, it comes into many pieces for easy transport and for getting into the more difficult of houses.

This Victorian mahogany sideboard dates from 1860. It employs dark brown solid timber and flame mahogany veneer, exhibiting a breakfront profile with two pedestal cupboards, three drawers below the top serving surface, and a large scrolled carved backboard. The piece stands on block feet, incorporates pronounced architectural mouldings, and displays rich grain patterns across its panels. It dismantles into multiple modular components for straightforward transport and assembly inside residential rooms. Measuring 208 cm wide, 71 cm deep, and 163 cm to the top of the backboard, this substantial item serves as a functional serving station and storage unit in a dining room or spacious hallway. It provides surface display space alongside enclosed cupboard storage for tableware, linens, or glassware within an English country house interior.

Victorian sideboards typically feature substantial proportions, rich dark timbers such as mahogany or walnut, and decorative carving. Many examples include high scrollwork backboards, twin pedestal cupboards, and breakfront profiles designed for formal dining room storage.

High-end Victorian sideboards were primarily constructed using solid mahogany or oak frameworks overlaid with decorative flame mahogany or walnut veneers. Internal drawers and backboards frequently used secondary timbers such as pine or deal.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, original brass or iron locks, natural wood oxidisation on underside surfaces, and signs of historical hand-planing on back panels.

A dark mahogany sideboard can be placed against light contemporary walls to create visual contrast. Styling the top surface with minimalist ceramics, modern lamps, or structured artwork balances the heavy historical proportions.

Dust regularly using a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish along the wood grain twice yearly. Protect the timber surface from direct sunlight, radiator heat, and moisture spills.
