Maritime art has a long tradition, with watercolour gaining prominence in the 18th and 19th centuries as artists sought to capture coastal scenes, naval engagements, and merchant shipping with immediacy and fluidity.

Traditional watercolours were typically painted on handmade rag paper using finely ground pigments suspended in a water-soluble binder, often housed behind glass within wooden frames.

Authentic pieces often display period-appropriate framing, ageing characteristics on the paper such as foxing or toning, artist signatures, and hand-applied pigments rather than modern digital reproduction dots.

Such pieces complement traditional studies, libraries, or living spaces, particularly when paired with dark woods, brass accents, and complementary historic artwork collections.

Watercolours are sensitive to light and humidity; they should be displayed away from direct sunlight in stable climate conditions behind UV-protective glazing to prevent fading.
