Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1860s:
Shrinkage gap between the top boards: natural movement of seasoned solid timber over time.
Baluster-turned front legs and pad feet: provincial cabinet work of the mid-nineteenth century.
Tiered shaped backboard with small shelves: typical French washstand arrangement of the period.
Side towel rails on turned brackets: functional provincial construction intact.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This unusual nineteenth-century French dressing table belongs to the French Provincial style and originates from around 1860. The piece is constructed from cherry wood in a warm brown colour, showing old woodworm holes that are long gone alongside good overall condition. Practical elements include a single central drawer fitted with an ornate brass handle, a scalloped shaped apron beneath, and original wooden peg handles attached to the sides. The upper section holds a stepped arrangement of two tiered open shelves beneath a shaped pediment. Below the main surface, four turned legs support a low open undertier shelf. Measuring 122 cm high by 104 cm wide and 45 cm deep, the table provides functional display and surface space for domestic use. Suitable placement in a modern interior includes a bedroom, hallway or living area as a distinctive focal point or display surface for decorative items and daily necessities.

French provincial dressing tables from the nineteenth century blend utilitarian design with regional elegance, often utilizing indigenous hardwoods like cherry, walnut, or oak with turned legs, simple carving, and functional tiering.

Cabinetmakers primarily used solid local timber such as cherry wood or fruitwood, paired with mortise and tenon joinery, brass or iron handles, and occasionally marble gallery tops for washing utility.

Authentic period pieces display hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, hand-planed secondary timbers on rear panels, natural oxidisation in wood grain, and irregular wooden pegging rather than modern screws.

These versatile timber pieces serve effectively as hallway console tables, bathroom vanity units, or statement bedside tables, offering warm natural wood tones to balance neutral modern interiors.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish twice yearly along the grain to nourish the timber and protect its natural patina from direct sunlight and humidity.
