This late nineteenth-century Victorian writing table follows a Gothic Revival 'Pugin' design attributed to Gillows and dates from circa 1880. Constructed from warm brown walnut, the rectangular top holds a dark blue leather insert decorated with gilt tooling. The frieze contains a single drawer with ash linings stamped 'Gillows Lancaster' and circular wooden pull knobs. Shaped corner brackets sit below the top, leading down to block and turned supports. The frame incorporates an 'H' stretcher base featuring exposed pegged joints. Brass castors stamped 'Copes Patent' support the base. Measuring 73 cm high, 91 cm wide, and 53 cm deep, this piece serves as a functional workspace in a study or home office.

Pugin style furniture reflects the Gothic Revival movement of the mid-to-late nineteenth century, led by designer A.W.N. Pugin. Key traits include structural honesty, exposed joinery motifs, turned or chamfered supports, and references to medieval architectural elements.

Victorian writing tables were predominantly crafted from solid hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, and oak. Writing surfaces were frequently fitted with gilded or blind-tooled leather insets, accompanied by brass castors and metal drawer pulls.

Authentic Gillows pieces frequently feature maker stamps such as GILLOWS, GILLOW & CO, or stamped serial numbers along the upper drawer edge or underneath the frame. High-grade dovetail joinery, premium timber selections, and original brass hardware further indicate genuine production.

A Victorian writing table serves as a functional focal point in a home office, library, or living room alcove. Placing modern lighting or contemporary decorative accessories on the surface creates an engaging contrast between historical timber and modern design.

Walnut timber should be dusted regularly with a soft cloth and conditioned periodically with beeswax polish to preserve its patina. Leather insets require occasional treatments with specialized leather balm to prevent drying, cracking, and moisture damage.
