Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian mahogany bowfront commode chest dates to 1850 and displays the clean lines characteristic of mid-nineteenth-century English country house style. The piece presents a warm brown mahogany timber construction with a distinctive bowfront curve and a lift-up fold-back front. Circular brass knob handles adorn the drawers, which are complemented by a shaped apron and splayed bracket feet at the base. Visible details include horizontal grain patterns and contrasting dark banding separating the drawer levels. Standing at 71 cm high, 61 cm wide, and 41 cm deep, the commode offers practical storage options suited for varied domestic uses. In a modern interior, this compact chest functions effectively in a bedroom as a bedside storage unit, in a hallway for small essentials, or in a living room as a side table next to seating. The traditional aesthetic and warm wood tones integrate smoothly into both period and contemporary room settings. The smooth top surface provides a display area for lamps, books, or decorative objects, while the internal space keeps clutter hidden away.

FAQs

A Victorian mahogany commode chest is a 19th-century piece of storage furniture featuring a curved convex front, traditionally constructed to house washstand items or converted for general drawer storage.

These pieces were typically crafted using solid mahogany and flame mahogany veneers over pine or oak carcases, fitted with cast brass knob or ring handles.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints on internal drawer linings, evidence of historical conversion or alterative fittings, and original timber shrinkage marks consistent with natural age.

Position the piece against a neutral wall backdrop and balance the deep mahogany tones with contemporary table lamps, framed artwork, or minimal ceramic vessels.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year, keeping the item away from direct radiators to avoid timber warping.
