This 19th-century Victorian mahogany chest of drawers displays a warm brown timber colour with a visible patina. The compact rectangular cabinet stands on shaped bracket feet and contains three graduated drawers arranged beneath a top pull-out brushing slide. Each drawer is fitted with a pair of brass oval drop handles, and small pull rings are mounted to the upper sides of the frame. The woodwork exhibits fine linear moulding details around the drawer faces and along the top edge. Measuring 70 cm high, 62 cm wide, and 43 cm deep, the piece offers modest proportions suited for storage and surface use. In a contemporary or traditional interior, the unit functions well as a bedside table or a small accent chest in a bedroom, hallway, or living room. The sliding shelf provides a pull-out surface for daily tasks, while the lower drawers organise folded clothing or personal items. The flat top surface accommodates a lamp, books, or decorative objects, integrating practical utility with classic English country house character.

Chests of drawers featuring integrated brushing slides emerged during the 18th and early 19th centuries. The pull-out shelf was originally designed to provide a clean surface for brushing clothes, folding garments, or laying out dressing items.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers over pine or oak carcases. Hand-cut dovetail joints, cockbeaded drawer edges, and cast brass oval drop handles were standard joinery hallmarks of the period.

Authentic pieces display irregular hand-cut dovetails inside the drawers, original brass lock mechanisms, vertical shrinkage marks on backboards, and natural oxidisation across the unpolished timber surfaces.

Rich mahogany tones provide a warm anchor when placed against neutral or deep wall paint. Pairing a period chest with contemporary table lamps or framed modern artwork creates an engaging balance of historic texture and modern design.

Maintain timber quality by applying a thin coat of clear beeswax once or twice a year, buffing gently with a soft cloth. Keep the item away from direct sunlight and central heating radiators to prevent veneer lifting or wood split.
