Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian three-seater sofa belongs to the Victorian period and exhibits a Gothic design vibe. The piece combines a rich walnut and ebonised timber frame with cream patterned upholstery fabric, featuring deep button-back tufting across the tall backrest and rolled arms. Visible details include intricately turned front legs, dark ebonised inlay work on the arm fronts, and pale patterned fabric with white material pulled across the seat base showing structural wear. Measuring 76 cm high, 174 cm wide, and 80 cm deep, the sofa provides comfortable seating for three adults. In a modern interior, this seating option serves as a striking statement piece in a formal living room, drawing room, or spacious hallway. The classic combination of dark wood and neutral upholstery allows it to anchor traditional or eclectic seating arrangements while offering a practical place to sit.

FAQs

Victorian button-back sofas feature deep diamond tufting across the backrest, rolled arms, and low padded seats. Popularised during the mid-to-late nineteenth century, these designs prioritized comfort alongside decorative woodwork such as turned legs and incised timber accents.

Frames were typically constructed from solid hardwoods like walnut, mahogany, or oak, often finished with ebonised detailing or lacquer. Internal padding commonly utilised coil springs, horsehair, and jute webbing beneath woven damask or velvet upholstery.

Authentic nineteenth-century examples feature hand-turned wooden legs, original brass castors, and deep, hand-tied buttoning rather than shallow modern tufting. Inspecting the underside reveals hand-stitched webbing and period construction methods rather than modern staples or synthetic foam.

Position the sofa as the primary anchor piece in a living space, balancing its ornate frame with contemporary minimalist side tables or neutral wall colours. Integrating modern lighting or structured wool throws creates an engaging contrast between traditional craftsmanship and modern design.

Clean upholstery fabric using a low-suction vacuum attachment with a soft brush to remove dust from deep button recesses. Treat exposed walnut and ebonised timber elements with a natural beeswax polish applied with a soft cloth to preserve the finish.
