Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A matching pair of Continental chests of drawers dates from 1850 in the English Country House style. Constructed from walnut and rosewood in a dark brown tone, the pair displays intricate parquetry inlay and crossbanded borders across the tops, sides, and fronts. Each chest contains three drawers fitted with ornate brass drop handles and stands raised on turned bun feet. The compact proportions measure 75 cm high, 76 cm wide, and 44 cm deep. Positioned on either side of a bed, these chests serve ideally as bedside storage tables within a bedroom setting. The rich wooden grain and patterned inlay complement traditional or classic interior schemes while offering functional surface and drawer space for daily essentials.

FAQs

Inlaid small chests and commodes gained widespread popularity during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries across Europe, particularly in France, Holland, and Britain. Craftspeople utilized intricate parquetry and marquetry veneer techniques to create decorative geometric patterns on compact furniture designed for personal chambers.

Traditional inlaid chests typically feature solid hardwood frames, such as oak or pine, veneered with decorative woods like walnut, kingwood, rosewood, or mahogany. Hardware generally consists of cast brass handles, escutcheons, and steel lock mechanisms.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut veneer joints, natural variation in wood grain, and hand-dovetailed drawer joints. Hand-forged iron or cast brass hardware showing slight irregularities and historical wear around handles and keyholes also indicate age.

A pair of inlaid chests functions effectively as flanking nightstands in a master bedroom or as symmetrical accent tables in a hallway or living room. Pairing them with contemporary table lamps or modern artwork creates a balanced contrast between traditional craftsmanship and modern design.

Preserve inlaid surfaces by dusting regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and applying high-grade beeswax twice a year. Keep the furniture away from direct sunlight, radiators, and high humidity to prevent the wood veneers from drying, cracking, or lifting.
