Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This large Italian walnut chest of drawers from 1910 exemplifies Italian Baroque style. The piece presents a warm brown colour scheme, fashioned from walnut, brass and ebonised wood. The figured walnut top has a polished wooden finish with visible natural grain variations. Four horizontal drawers run across the front, each trimmed with dark ebonised moulding and featuring carved drawer centres. Small circular brass knob handles are fitted to each drawer front. The lower edge beneath the top features a carved decorative frieze. The entire structure stands at 102 cm high, 138 cm wide, and 58 cm deep. Position this substantial chest of drawers in a gentleman's library or a spacious master bedroom to provide generous storage capacity. The surface offers ample room for displaying table lamps, framed photographs, or decorative objects. The traditional design and dark accents complement classic interior schemes, pairing well with leather seating and heavy drapery.

FAQs

Italian walnut chests of drawers, often referred to as commodes, typically feature warm-toned walnut veneers, detailed drawer mouldings, and carved accents. Many Italian designs integrate ebonised framing, classical proportions, and brass hardware to highlight the contrast of materials.

Primary construction relies on solid walnut and walnut veneers for the exterior surfaces, occasionally complemented by fruitwood or ebonised trims. Drawer linings and back panels commonly utilise secondary local timber such as poplar or pine, finished with cast brass handles.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of traditional joinery, including hand-cut dovetails on drawer joints, hand-planed timber boards, and irregular wear patterns consistent with age. Look for poplar secondary woods inside drawers and natural patination across original brass fittings.

Position the piece as a focal point in an entry hall, dining room, or master suite. Combine its rich wood tones with muted wall paint, modern lamps, or architectural art objects to balance historic detail with contemporary space.

Dust regularly with a clean, dry microfibre cloth to protect the surface finish. Apply a quality clear beeswax polish along the wood grain once or twice a year, and maintain stable indoor humidity to prevent wood movement or cracking.
