Antique George III Elm & Oak Clerk's Desk C.1800

18th century
Description

A Georgian clerk's desk, the hinged writing slope fashioned from a single plank of figured elm opening to an interior fitted with four small drawers flanking arched pigeonholes, set over a full-width flush frieze drawer and raised on square oak legs.

The provincial combination of a single-board English elm slope over an oak carcass reflects classic late Georgian workshop pragmatism, exploiting the enormous natural girth of mature elm to achieve an unbroken writing plane free of joints. The compact footprint, elevated form and open stretcherless stance allow the piece to function naturally as an architectural accent table offering practical, concealed storage in a hallway or sitting room.

Very good antique condition, retaining a characterful, seasoned patination, historic ink staining to the interior well and beautiful very early hand-forged iron reinforcement straps to the sides. Structurally sound and ready to place in the home.

English, circa 1800.

This Georgian clerk's desk from around 1800 combines dark brown elm and oak timbers with brass hardware, showcasing a slanted hinged top, keyhole escutcheons, and straight square legs. The timber displays a seasoned patination across its surfaces, accompanied by brass swan-neck handles fitted to the lower drawer. Standing at 88.5 cm high, 69 cm wide, and 45.5 cm deep, the compact footprint permits versatile placement in domestic interiors. Homeowners can position this piece in a hallway or sitting room, utilizing the elevated form and concealed storage for correspondence or everyday items. The provincial construction pairs a single-board English elm writing slope with an oak carcass, reflecting late Georgian workshop design. Opening the slope reveals an interior fitted with four small drawers flanking arched pigeonholes, alongside historic ink staining and early hand-forged iron reinforcement straps on the sides. The open stretcherless stance and structural soundness make this desk ready for daily use in a gentleman's library or modern study space, serving as both a functional writing surface and a practical architectural accent table.

A clerks desk from the George III period, typically dating from the late 18th to early 19th century, features a slanted writing surface designed for reading or writing, often constructed with drawers or internal storage compartments.

These desks were commonly constructed from native British hardwoods such as oak, elm, walnut, and pine, often fitted with cast brass keyhole escutcheons and hand-dovetailed drawer joints.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit hand-sawn timber marks, period-correct brass hardware with natural patination, hand-cut dovetail joints inside drawers, and subtle uneven wear consistent with historical use.

A compact clerks desk functions effectively as an accent writing station, hallway focal piece, or small home office desk, providing visual texture when paired alongside contemporary minimalist decor.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish periodically along the grain to preserve the wood moisture and patination while keeping the piece away from direct heat sources.
