A French Louis Philippe Flame Mahogany Marble-topped Commode

19th century
Description

Louis Philippe Flame Mahogany Marble-Topped Commode

French, circa 1835

A superb Louis Philippe period commode, crafted in richly figured flame mahogany and retaining its original grey Pyrenees marble top with finely reeded edge. The elegant moulded top rail conceals a blind frieze drawer, complete with working lock and key, above three generous long drawers fitted with twin brass drop handles.

Further enhancing both practicality and intrigue, the commode also incorporates a discreet secret drawer concealed within the plinth. The beautifully book-matched mahogany veneers display exceptional movement and depth of figure across the drawer fronts and side panels, creating a striking visual effect.

Raised on a plinth base with low bracket feet, this chest embodies the clean lines and restrained elegance characteristic of the Louis Philippe period, offering excellent storage and timeless decorative appeal.

A refined and highly practical piece, equally suited to a bedroom, drawing room or hallway.

Originating in France between 1830 and 1848 during the reign of King Louis Philippe, this design style is recognised for its clean geometric profiles, soft rounded corners, ogee mouldings, and focus on high-quality wood veneers such as mahogany and walnut.

These commodes typically feature solid oak or pine frame construction finished with rich flame mahogany or walnut veneers, capped with heavy natural marble slabs such as Sainte-Anne grey or white marble.

Key identification features include a hidden or protruding top drawer shaped with a concave ogee curve, a straight plinth base resting on small bracket or block feet, hand-dovetailed drawer joints, and an absence of applied carved decoration.

The understated architecture of a Louis Philippe commode integrates seamlessly into modern settings by pairing warm mahogany tone and marble texture with contemporary artwork, sculptural table lamps, or neutral wall finishes.

Dust mahogany surfaces regularly with a soft cloth and apply clear beeswax polish occasionally along the grain, while cleaning the marble slab using only pH-neutral stone cleaners to prevent etching from acidic substances.
