Antique Silver Cyma Pocket Watch, Locomotive Interest

1900 - 1920
Description

Antique silver Cyma pocket watch, locomotive interest.

The watch has a Swiss stem-winding movement which is working nicely. The movement has been identified as by Cyma. It is all protected by an inner cover.

The watch measures 47mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside the two case backs for London (import mark), 1918, with a sponsor’s mark for George Stockwell. From 1 June 1907, Stockwells acted as assay agents, facilitating the import into Britain of foreign gold and silver items which had to be assayed and hallmarked in a UK assay office before being released for retail. The case is in good condition, just some unevenness to the back. The back of the watch has the elaborately engraved initials.

The glass lens has light marking but is very acceptable.

The dial has an image of a steam locomotive which is in the enamel, not an applied detail. It is in very nice condition with blued steel hands, a subsidiary seconds dial and outer minute track.

The watch comes with a single silver chain, 35cm long including the T-bar and the clasp. There is also a fob from the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants, a major 19th-century UK trade union founded in 1871. The chain weighs 28g plus the fob.

The watch and chain come in a new presentation box.

This Edwardian pocket watch is a silver timepiece created in 1910 in a gentleman's library style. The watch contains a white enamel dial with a steam locomotive illustration, Roman numerals, a subsidiary seconds dial, and blued steel hands beneath a glass lens. A silver Albert chain with a T-bar and an enamelled fob attaches to the case, which displays engraved initials on the back and hallmarks for London from 1918. The silver case features a round shape with a winding stem and loop at the top. The piece is suitable for display on a desk, shelf, or within a cabinet as part of a railway or horological collection. It fits well in study spaces, offices, or living rooms themed around historical transport.

Railway pocket watches were introduced in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as essential tools for train conductors and engineers to maintain strict timetables and prevent rail collisions. Manufacturers produced specialized timepieces with high-accuracy movements, clear dials, and thematic engravings reflecting the growing railway networks.

Authentic timepieces of this period typically feature cases made of sterling silver, nickel alloy, or gold, surrounding a vitreous enamel dial with painted numerals. The internal mechanical movements consist of brass plates, steel gears, and synthetic ruby jewels.

Authenticity is verified through maker hallmarks, silver purity stamps inside the case back, serial numbers on the movement, and fine enamel work on the dial. Official railway watches often contain specific maker signatures such as Cyma, alongside clear railway union or company emblems.

Pocket watches are frequently displayed under a glass dome cloche or suspended from a dedicated brass pocket watch stand on a desk or bookshelf. This presentation highlights the craftsmanship while protecting the mechanical movement from dust.

Store the timepiece in a dry environment away from moisture and direct sunlight. Clean the outer silver casing gently using a non-abrasive microfiber cloth, avoiding liquid polishes on the dial, and arrange for periodic mechanical servicing by a qualified horologist.
