17th Century Leaded Bronze Cauldron Somerset Type Antique Bronze Cooking Pot C.1650

17th century
Description

A substantial and highly decorative 17th-century English leaded-bronze tripod cauldron, probably of West Country manufacture, dating to approximately the mid-to-late 17th century.

Of traditional bellied form, the vessel stands on three short feet and is fitted with a pair of angular loop handles beneath a broad everted rim. The heavy cast construction, visible mould seams, irregular hand-finished surfaces and naturally developed patina are characteristic of early English domestic bronze work.

The cauldron has an attractive dark brown-black surface with warmer bronze tones showing through on areas of historic wear. Numerous scratches, casting imperfections and surface irregularities remain visible, adding considerable character and providing evidence of its long working life.

Large leaded-bronze cauldrons of this type were important household vessels during the 16th and 17th centuries, traditionally used for cooking, brewing, heating water and general domestic preparation. Closely related examples were produced by several English foundries, including workshops operating in Somerset and elsewhere in the West Country. No identifiable founder’s mark has been confirmed on this example, so the regional attribution is deliberately given as probably West Country rather than assigned to a particular foundry.

The three feet appear to have been historically reduced through wear or alteration, something frequently encountered on surviving early cauldrons. Historic casting seams and surface flaws are also visible, together with areas that may represent old working repairs or reinforcement.

Origin: England, probably West Country

Period: 17th century

Date: Circa 1650–1700

Material: Leaded bronze / copper alloy

Height: Approx. 28cm

Width across handles: Approx. 33cm

Condition: Good genuine antique condition considering its considerable age. Extensive historic surface wear, scratches, patination, casting irregularities and marks consistent with centuries of use. The three feet are reduced, probably historically, and there are old casting flaws and possible historic localised repairs. No obvious major recent restoration is apparent from inspection of the photographs. Please examine all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the description.

A very attractive survivor of early English domestic metalware, with excellent country-house character and strong sculptural presence.

REDUCED: Was £1,095, now £876. Save £219.

This seventeenth-century English leaded bronze cauldron is a traditional domestic vessel of heavy cast construction. The dark bronze object features a broad flared upper rim, two angular loop handles, and three short tripod feet. The irregular hand-finished surface displays prominent casting seams, numerous scratches, surface flaws, and warmer bronze tones showing through on areas of historic wear. This sturdy piece measures 28 cm high and 33 cm wide. Suitable for rustic farmhouse interiors, the cauldron functions well as a decorative object placed on a fireplace hearth or styled on a sturdy wooden table. The substantial bellied form provides a strong sculptural presence and brings authentic early domestic metalware into a modern living space.

A 17th-century leaded bronze cauldron is a heavy cast metal vessel designed for cooking over open fires during the Stuart era, typically featuring a rounded body, flared rim, and tripod legs.

These vessels were cast using copper alloys, specifically leaded bronze, using clay or sand moulds to create durable cookware capable of withstanding direct heat.

Authentic period cauldrons feature visible casting seam lines, hand-finished surfaces, integrated legs cast as part of the body, and evidence of historical heat exposure.

An antique cauldron functions as a focal display piece on a fireplace hearth, a vessel for dried floral arrangements, or an accent object on open wooden shelving.

Dust the item using a soft dry cloth and apply microcrystalline wax to protect the metal from moisture and oxidisation without stripping its natural surface patina.
