Antique Turkmen Chuval, Teke Tribes, Akhal Oasis, Turkmenistan, Central Asia.

19th century
Description

This amazing Teke Turkmen 'chuval' (storage-bag) has to be seen and handled to appreciate the incredible fineness of weave. If I say it is like silk-velvet, that might be a good general description!

The beautiful cochineal-dye ground cointains three vertical columns of three Teke 'guls' (tribal crests) interspersed with minor guls, where the field gives the impression of disappearing under the borders and out into infinity. The bottom 'elem' or skirt contains stylised plants or trees.

Made during the early to mid 19th century by Teke tribes in the Akhal Oasis, the chuval is in very good overall condition albeit having a small tear in the upper centre which in my mind, doesn't detract from the overall quality of this fantastic piece, and two areas in the top right and left corners which have been repaired, probably due to the original tie-cords having put a strain on the corners of the bag when hung on the camels.

Chuvals were made in pairs with plain-weave backs and hung on the flanks of the camels during migrations. This chuval has lost its plain-weave back.

Size: 1.34 x 0.80m (4' 5" x 2' 7").

Date of Manufacture

Brian MacDonald Antique Rugs & Carpets has dated this Antique Turkmen Teke Chuval to the 1850s.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1850s:
Extremely fine hand knotting: high density typical of nineteenth-century nomadic weaving.
Rich cochineal-dyed ground: natural dye used before the widespread adoption of synthetic colours.
Classic Akhal Teke guls: traditional tribal pattern in three columns of three.
Finely woven elem skirt: stylised tree motifs along the lower border.
Old hand stitching along the top: historic tension wear from suspension cords.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This antique Turkmen chuval textile originates from the Teke tribes of the Akhal Oasis in Central Asia during the mid nineteenth century. Handwoven from wool using natural dyes, the rectangular piece displays a deep red ground featuring three vertical columns of three octagonal Teke gul motifs in navy, dark red, and ivory tones, interspersed with minor guls and geometric borders. The lower border contains a decorated elem skirt panel with stylised plant patterns, whilst repairs are visible in the upper corners alongside a small tear in the upper centre. Measuring 134 cm by 80 cm, the textile is suitable for display on a wall or floor within a traditional study, library, or living space as a decorative cultural accent.

A chuval is a traditional nomadic storage bag crafted by Turkmen tribes of Central Asia. Historically mounted inside a yurt to hold clothing and household goods, the pile-woven front panels feature distinctive tribal emblems known as guls.

These textiles are hand-knotted using hand-spun sheeps wool on a wool warp and weft. Saturated hues of deep red, madder, indigo, and ivory are achieved using natural vegetable dyes, tied with dense asymmetrical knots.

Authentic Teke pieces demonstrate tight knotting density, fine wool quality, and specific octagonal Teke gul designs arranged in symmetrical rows. They typically feature an un-patterned back panel or evidence of historic bag construction along the selvages.

A Turkmen chuval face can be used as a small accent rug, mounted as acoustic wall art, or draped over furniture to add warm tones, geometric pattern, and historical texture to both classic and modern spaces.

Keep the textile out of direct sunlight to prevent natural dye fading. Vacuum gently using suction only without a rotating brush, and consult a specialist textile conservator for professional washing.
