This eighteenth-century Georgian framed print presents a monochrome mezzotint portrait of Robert Marsham, 2nd Baron Romney, engraved by John Finlayson after Sir Joshua Reynolds. The paper print displays a full-length figure in ceremonial robes, complete with publication inscriptions along the bottom margin. The assembly sits inside a dark wooden frame finished with a thin gilt inner slip and protective glass. Visible elements include carved cabriole legs on the side table, turned wooden book spines stacked underneath, and moulded corner joints on the black timber moulding of the frame. The sheet measures 38cm x 64cm, while the framed piece measures 50cm x 77cm. Hang this artwork above a sideboard in a gentleman's library or study to complement traditional decor.

A mezzotint is an intaglio printmaking technique developed in the 17th century that gained immense popularity in Britain during the 18th century. It allowed artists to reproduce oil paintings with rich, tonal gradations and deep velvety shadows, making fine portraits accessible to a wider market.

Mezzotints were created using a copper plate, which was systematically roughened with a metal rocker tool before areas were smoothed down to create highlights. The plate was then inked and printed onto handmade rag paper using a high-pressure rolling press.

Authentic period mezzotints feature visible indentation marks around the image border from the copper plate, known as plate marks. They also display faint texture or watermarks on handmade laid paper and typically include engraved publication lines along the lower margin.

A monochrome antique print provides depth and contrast when set against dark, dramatic paint tones or rich timber panelling. Hanging portrait prints in gallery wall arrangements or centrally above a console table or sideboard creates a grounded, traditional focal point.

To prevent fading and foxing, display paper prints away from direct sunlight and areas of high humidity. Frame the print using acid-free mounting boards and UV-protective glazing to preserve the paper and ink over time.
