MEZZOTINT PORTRAIT OF PRINCE WILLIAM HENRY DUKE OF GLOUCESTER AND BENJAMIN BATHURST BY JOHN SMITH AFTER THOMAS MURRAY.

Fine mezzotint portrait of Prince William Henry, Duke of Gloucester (1689–1700), the only son of Queen Anne to survive infancy, standing alongside his childhood companion, Benjamin Bathurst (1691/2–1767). 

The Duke is depicted in the foreground wearing his Garter robes, likely commemorating his installation as a Knight of the Garter on July 25, 1696. Benjamin Bathurst, stands slightly behind him to the left, and the pair are depicted in St George's Chapel, Windsor.

Benjamin Bathurst went on to have a long political career, serving as a Member of Parliament for over fifty years, representing Cirencester, Gloucester, and Monmouth. He is famously noted for having fathered 36 children across two marriages.

A mezzotint is a tonal copperplate printmaking process developed in the 17th century that enables smooth gradations of tone without line hatching. It became the primary method for reproducing oil portraits in Britain during the late 17th and 18th centuries.

Mezzotints were created by systematically roughening a copper plate with a metal rocker, then smoothing areas with a scraper to create light and dark tones. Prints were impressed onto rag paper using oil-based inks and subsequently mounted and framed for display.

Authentic period mezzotints exhibit rich, velvet-like dark tones and faint plate impression lines around the border where the copper plate pressed into damp paper. Under magnification, soft tonal transitions rather than uniform dots or mechanical lines are visible.
