This French Provincial chest of drawers originates from 1930 and belongs to the French Chateau design aesthetic. The piece consists of bleached oak with a pale wood colour and original brass drop handles. The construction incorporates solid oak panelled sides, a moulded top, and swept cabriole legs ending in escargot feet. Each of the three horizontal drawers displays carved scrollwork framing the hardware and central keyhole escutcheons. The exterior surfaces show a stripped and sanded finish. Measuring 79 cm high, 95 cm wide, and 49 cm deep, the unit provides compact storage capacity suitable for a bedroom, hallway, or living space. The traditional silhouette complements rustic interior schemes while offering functional surface space and drawer organisation.

FAQs

French provincial commodes developed during the 18th century as regional interpretations of Parisian court furniture, primarily influenced by Louis XV and Louis XVI designs. Crafted by local artisans outside major cities, these pieces adapted formal styles into practical, durable wooden storage for country homes.

Traditional French commodes are constructed from solid native hardwoods, most commonly oak, walnut, or fruitwood, utilizing hand-cut dovetail joints and wooden peg joinery. Decorative elements typically include cast brass or bronze escutcheons and handles, hand-carved scrollwork, and contoured serpentine front panels.

Authenticity can be verified by examining drawer construction for hand-sawn timber lines, original iron locks, and uneven hand-carved dovetails. Age is also indicated by wear patterns around handle mounts, shrinkage gaps in side panels, and historical wood movement.

A bleached oak commode anchors a neutral modern room by introducing warmth and tactile grain texture. Pair it with contemporary minimalist artwork, modern table lamps, or structured ceramic vessels to create a balanced contrast between historical craftsmanship and clean lines.

Maintain bleached oak by dusting regularly with a dry, lint-free microfibre cloth and keeping the timber away from direct sunlight or damp conditions. Avoid liquid polishes and harsh chemicals, applying a clear, non-yellowing neutral wax sparingly once a year to protect the pale finish.
